Microneedling Guide FAQs
More Pre Post Care Microneedling Guide FAQs
These frequently asked questions cover what to expect before and after microneedling at Elev8 Aesthetic Medicine in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge, including how to prepare, what to avoid, and when to reach out if something feels off. Reviewing these answers alongside the detailed pre and post care checklist above can help you feel more confident and prepared for every stage of your treatment, from your first consultation through your follow up appointment.
Microneedling uses fine needles to create tiny, controlled injuries in the skin. This triggers your body's natural healing response and stimulates collagen production over time.
Most clients see gradual improvement in fine lines, scarring, and skin texture starting around 2 to 4 weeks after treatment, with results continuing to build over several months as collagen regenerates.
If you are unsure whether your skin is a good candidate, mentioning your skin type, sensitivities, and any recent procedures during your consultation helps our team set realistic expectations for your specific results.
Most people are comfortable returning to normal daily activities within 24 hours, though visible redness and mild sensitivity can last 1 to 3 days depending on your skin.
Full healing beneath the surface continues for several weeks as new collagen forms, which is why our pre and post care guidelines above cover specific windows like 24, 48, and 72 hours after your session.
Following the pre and post care steps closely, rather than skipping steps when you feel fine, is one of the simplest ways to support smoother healing and better long-term results.
In the week before treatment, we recommend pausing retinoids, exfoliating acids, and blood thinners where possible, along with avoiding sun exposure, tanning, and waxing near the treatment area.
Three days prior, avoid anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or Advil, and skip alcohol the night before your appointment. If you take prescribed blood thinners, check with your physician before adjusting anything.
Bringing a list of current medications and skincare products to your consultation makes it easier for our team to flag anything that should be paused before your appointment.
No, makeup should be avoided for at least 24 hours after treatment, and many clients find it more comfortable to wait closer to 48 hours before applying anything to the treated area.
During this window, focus on the aftercare lotions provided and a gentle mineral sunscreen once your skin is ready, rather than reintroducing your regular makeup routine too soon.
Keeping your hands off the treated area and resisting the urge to touch or check your skin throughout the day also helps reduce irritation while it heals.
Yes, mild redness, warmth, and sensitivity are expected in the first 24 to 48 hours as your skin responds to the treatment. This typically fades on its own within a few days.
However, if you notice drainage, a fever above 101.5°F, increased warmth that worsens rather than improves, or pain that does not respond to over-the-counter relief, contact the office immediately.
Taking a photo of any symptoms that concern you before calling can help our team assess the situation quickly if you do need to reach out.
We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs for at least 48 hours after treatment. Excess heat and sweating can irritate freshly treated skin and increase the risk of complications.
Once the initial 48-hour window has passed, most clients can gradually return to their normal workout routine, though it is still wise to avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area.
Staying well hydrated in the days around your appointment can also support your skin's natural healing process, alongside avoiding excess heat exposure.
The number of sessions depends on your specific skin concerns and goals, but many clients complete a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart for optimal collagen-building results.
A two-week follow-up is typically recommended after each session so our team can check your progress and confirm the timing of your next appointment.
Spacing sessions consistently, rather than skipping appointments, tends to produce more noticeable improvement over a full treatment series than sessions spread further apart.
Yes. Combining this treatment with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a popular option because PRP can help accelerate healing and further support collagen production. This combination is sometimes informally called a "vampire facial."
Whether this combination is right for you depends on your skin goals and history, so it is worth discussing during your consultation before your appointment is booked.
Since individual skin responses vary, your provider can help determine realistic timing and spacing if you are considering pairing these two treatments.
Some clients choose to pair this procedure with plant-based exosome treatments to further support skin repair and collagen stimulation after the microneedling process creates micro-channels in the skin.
As with any combination treatment, the right approach depends on your skin type, goals, and treatment history, so this is best discussed directly with your provider.
If you have a specific area of concern, such as acne scarring on one part of the face, let your provider know so treatment can be focused accordingly.
The treatment is commonly used on the forehead, cheeks, area around the mouth, neck, and décolletage, though treatment areas can be adjusted based on your specific concerns.
Scarring from acne, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage are among the most frequent reasons clients choose this treatment for these areas, alongside general improvements in fine lines and skin texture.
Using fragrance-free, gentle products during the healing window generally reduces the risk of irritation compared to switching to new or active-ingredient products too soon.
Immediately after treatment, a thin layer of soothing aftercare lotion is applied to hydrate the skin, and this should be reapplied through the day as your skin feels increasingly sensitive.
By day three, most clients can gradually reintroduce their normal skincare routine, including vitamin C serum and mineral sunscreen, once the initial healing window has passed.
If irritation does occur after reintroducing a product, pause it again and allow a few extra days before trying it a second time.
No, retinoids, exfoliating agents, and other harsh actives should be avoided for at least 24 hours after treatment, since freshly treated skin is more sensitive and prone to irritation.
Reintroduce these products gradually and only once your skin has settled, typically a few days after treatment, and stop use again promptly if you notice any unusual irritation.
Sharing your full medication history, including any recent isotretinoin use, ensures your treatment timeline is planned safely from the very first consultation.
If you take blood thinners, it is important to check with your prescribing physician before scheduling the treatment, since these medications can affect bruising and healing.
Our team will also ask about current medications during your consultation so we can flag any concerns and adjust recommendations for your specific situation.
Being upfront with our team about any health changes since your last visit helps keep every future appointment as safe and effective as possible.
We recommend waiting at least two weeks after IPL or laser procedures, and avoiding unprotected sun exposure or sunburn during that window, before starting this treatment.
This spacing gives your skin time to recover fully, which helps reduce the risk of irritation and supports a smoother healing process during your microneedling session.
If you are recovering from a recent cosmetic procedure of any kind, it is worth mentioning this during booking so your microneedling timeline can be adjusted if needed.
Contact our office immediately if you notice drainage from the treated area, increasing warmth that does not settle, a fever of 101.5°F or higher, or severe pain that does not improve with standard pain relievers.
These are not typical parts of the healing process, and prompt communication helps our team address any concerns quickly.
Keeping a simple note of when symptoms started can help our team respond more efficiently if you do need to reach out about anything unusual.
