Pre Post Care BOTOX FAQs
Botox Aftercare FAQs: Pre and Post Care in Kitchener-Waterloo
Here are the most common questions our Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge clients ask about Botox aftercare, pre-treatment prep, and what to expect during recovery. These answers build on the pre and post care guidelines above and cover the details clients ask about most often before and after their appointment with Elev8's nurse-led team.
Botox aftercare refers to the specific steps you take in the hours and days following your injections to protect your results. This includes avoiding pressure on the treated area, staying upright, and steering clear of alcohol and intense heat for the first day. Elev8's nurse-led team reviews these steps with every client before treatment begins.
Following these steps helps the product settle evenly into the targeted muscles rather than shifting to nearby areas. Skipping aftercare guidance can increase the risk of bruising, uneven results, or a longer recovery than necessary. Most guidance only applies for the first 24 hours, so it is a short commitment for a smoother outcome.
Most clients are advised to avoid intense workouts, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24 hours after treatment. Sweating and increased blood flow during this window can encourage the product to move before it fully settles into place. This applies to hot yoga and spin classes as much as it does to weight training. Elev8's clinic hours run Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., making it easy to schedule around your workout routine.
Light daily activity, like walking or gentle stretching, is generally fine right away and does not carry the same risk. If you have a specific fitness event or class planned, mention it during your consultation so your provider can advise on timing around your treatment.
It is best to avoid makeup for 24 hours after your Botox appointment. This gives the small injection sites time to close naturally and lowers the chance of irritation or infection at those points. Our team is happy to answer any last-minute questions about products or timing when you check in for your appointment.
Once the 24-hour window has passed, most clients can return to their regular makeup routine without issue. Using clean brushes and gentle, fragrance-free products is a good habit during the first few days of recovery, especially around the injection sites themselves.
Lying flat too soon after treatment can allow the product to shift away from the intended muscles before it has time to settle. Elev8 recommends avoiding sleeping flat for the first night after your appointment for this reason. This is a precaution rather than a strict medical rule, but it is worth following closely.
Propping yourself up with an extra pillow or two is a simple way to stay slightly elevated overnight. This precaution is especially relevant for treatments in the forehead, brow, or crow's feet areas, where gravity can have more influence on the product. If you have questions about positioning during sleep, your provider can offer tips specific to your treatment area.
Mild bruising or redness at the injection site is a common and normal response to treatment. It usually looks like a small pink or purple mark and is not a sign that anything went wrong during your appointment. Areas with thinner skin, like around the eyes, tend to bruise more easily than others.
Avoiding blood-thinning substances like alcohol, Advil, ASA, fish oil, and Vitamin E in the days before your appointment can meaningfully reduce this risk. Bruising typically fades within a few days to about a week, and concealer can help in the meantime. If bruising seems unusually severe or does not improve after a week, reach out to the clinic for reassurance.
You should avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying firm pressure to the treated area for the rest of the day after your appointment. This helps keep the product exactly where your provider placed it during the session rather than letting it spread to nearby muscles.
Washing your face with a gentle cleanser is fine during this time, as long as you use light, patting motions rather than rubbing. Avoid facial massages, exfoliating tools, or vigorous cleansing devices for a few days as well. Your provider will also review any area-specific precautions with you before you leave the clinic.
Botox typically begins working within 3 to 7 days after your appointment, with full results usually visible around the two-week mark. This gradual onset is completely normal and expected, so do not be concerned if you do not notice a change on day one or two.
This is exactly why Elev8 recommends booking a two-week follow-up appointment before you leave your initial visit. If any areas need a small touch-up, your provider can assess and address it at that follow-up. Both the Kitchener and Cambridge locations follow the same two-week follow-up recommendation for consistency.
Botox results generally last between 3 and 4 months, though some clients see effects last as long as 6 months. The exact duration varies quite a bit from person to person and even treatment area to treatment area within the same client.
Factors like muscle activity, metabolism, treatment area, and how consistently you book follow-up sessions all play a role. Many clients find that results last slightly longer with repeated, consistent treatments booked over time. Booking your next appointment before you leave helps keep your results consistent throughout the year.
Alcohol should be avoided for 24 hours both before and after your treatment. Alcohol thins the blood, which increases the likelihood of noticeable bruising at the injection sites afterward, and it can also contribute to swelling in some clients.
Staying well hydrated with water in the days surrounding your appointment supports smoother healing and can help minimize swelling. If you have a social event planned, scheduling treatment a few days ahead is generally a good idea to allow any bruising to fade. If you tend to feel nervous around needles, mentioning this beforehand can help your provider put you at ease.
Having a proper breakfast or snack before your appointment is recommended. Arriving on an empty stomach can make some clients feel lightheaded or uneasy during the procedure itself, particularly if needles make you nervous.
Staying hydrated in the days leading up to treatment is equally important for comfort and skin condition. A balanced meal beforehand, paired with avoiding blood thinners, sets you up for a more comfortable overall appointment experience. Staying consistent with hydration in general also supports healthier-looking skin between appointments.
Facials should be avoided for at least two weeks following Botox injections. The pressure and manipulation involved in a typical facial can disrupt the product before it has fully settled into the treated muscles, potentially affecting your final results.
Once the two-week period has passed and you have completed your follow-up appointment, gentle facials can typically resume as part of your regular skincare routine, including services offered on the Elev8 skincare menu. Your provider can also suggest gentle, Botox-safe skincare options in the meantime if needed.
Contact the office right away if you notice drainage from the injection site, increased warmth in the treated area, a fever of 101.5 degrees or higher, or severe pain that does not improve with over-the-counter pain relievers. These signs are outlined clearly in the pre and post care guidance above.
These symptoms are not typical after a routine Botox appointment and should be evaluated promptly by the clinical team. Reaching out early allows staff to assess the situation and advise on appropriate next steps. Elev8's team, based in Kitchener with a second location in Cambridge, can be reached through the contact page for phone or email support.
Yes, Botox and Dysport are both neurotoxin injectables, so the same pre and post care guidelines generally apply to both products. This includes avoiding blood thinners beforehand and avoiding pressure, heat, and alcohol afterward, regardless of which product is used.
Your Elev8 provider will confirm any product-specific guidance during your appointment, since small differences in onset time can occasionally affect scheduling or follow-up recommendations. This consistency across both neurotoxins is part of why many clients feel comfortable trying either option.
Yes, some clients combine Botox with dermal fillers in a single visit for a more complete result across the upper and lower face. Botox relaxes targeted muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles, while fillers add volume to areas like the lips or cheeks, so the two work in different ways.
When treatments are combined, your Elev8 provider will merge the relevant aftercare guidance for each one so nothing is missed. This combination approach is popular among clients who want a more comprehensive refresh in a single appointment.
Botox is derived from botulinum toxin, which temporarily relaxes targeted facial muscles to soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, such as those around the forehead, brows, and eyes. This is different from fillers, which physically add volume rather than relax muscle movement.
Elev8's nurse-led team uses precise, low-dose injections tailored to each client's facial anatomy, muscle strength, and aesthetic goals. This is one of many general health topics worth understanding if you are new to injectable treatments.
The core aftercare steps are the same for every client, but first-time clients often have more questions about what sensations or timelines to expect during the recovery process, which is completely understandable.
Elev8's team walks new clients through every step before and after treatment, including what to expect in the first 24 hours and at the two-week follow-up. New clients are also welcome to ask about the clinic's women-owned, nurse-led background, described further on our about page, during their visit.
Short travel is generally fine after Botox, though it is wise to avoid strenuous activity or extreme heat exposure, such as long walks through hot airports, during the first 24 hours after treatment. Cabin pressure itself is not typically a concern.
If you have concerns about an upcoming trip or a long flight, mention it during your appointment so your provider can offer guidance specific to your travel plans. Booking a few days before or after travel, rather than the same day, is often the simplest approach.
Missing a minor step, such as briefly touching your face, does not usually cause lasting problems. Your body is generally forgiving of small slip-ups during the recovery window, and most clients still see excellent results.
However, consistently ignoring guidance, such as intense exercise or alcohol use in the first 24 hours, can increase the risk of bruising or uneven settling. Elev8's clinical team is always available by phone or email if you have any doubts about your recovery.
You can view real client examples on the Botox, filler, and Dysport gallery, which shows a range of treatment outcomes across different facial areas and concerns treated by our nurse-led team.
